Sedation Dentistry for Kids | Issaqueena Pediatric Dentistry

A trip to the dentist should be something your child looks forward to, not fears. That’s why we’ve built a pediatric practice rooted in fun, safety, and compassion. From your baby’s very first “happy visit” to your teenager’s final orthodontic check-in, Issaqueena Pediatric Dentistry is committed to delivering positive dental experiences aimed at nurturing confident, healthy smiles.

If your child cries before you've even parked, or has come home from another dental visit shaken up, you're not looking for a pep talk. You want someone who can actually help. Dr. Horton and the team at Issaqueena Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics understand that, and sedation dentistry is often what makes real treatment possible for kids who need it most.

We offer three levels of sedation across our Seneca, Clemson, and Piedmont offices, from a mild oral sedative for the nervous child all the way to IV sedation with a board-certified anesthesiologist. The right fit depends on your child, and we help you figure that out before anything is scheduled.

Ready to talk it through? Call our Seneca office at (864) 482-7900, our Clemson office at (864) 722-9013, or our Piedmont office at (864) 625-1283).

The Short Version, If You're in a Hurry

  • Three Levels, One Practice. Mild oral sedation, in-office IV sedation, and hospital-based treatment are all available here, so the right plan never means starting over somewhere new.
  • A Dedicated Anesthesia Doctor Handles the Sedation. Their only job that day is keeping your child safe and comfortable.
  • Your Child Is Monitored the Whole Time. A dedicated team member watches your child from start to finish, and everyone in the room is trained in emergency response.
  • Most Appointments Run 45 Minutes to an Hour. Plan for a quiet rest of the day once you are home, with easy foods and low-key activities.
  • You Can Start From Home. Our teledentistry option lets you send photos and ask questions before your child ever sits in a chair.

How Sedation Works at Our Practice

Sedation sounds like a big word until you realize it is the same family of care as ear tubes, a tonsillectomy, or wisdom teeth removal. Here is what each level looks like.

1. Oral Conscious Sedation

Your child takes a prescribed medication before the visit. They stay awake and can respond to us, but feel noticeably calmer. This is a good fit for the mildly anxious child who needs work done in a single visit.

2. IV Sedation in Our Office

A board-certified anesthesiologist comes to our office and keeps your child comfortably asleep through the appointment. No shots while awake, no discomfort, and most children remember very little of the visit. One doctor watches over your child the entire time while the pediatric dentist focuses on the dental work.

3. Treatment in a Hospital Setting

For children with complex medical needs or more extensive dental work, we can complete treatment under general anesthesia at an outpatient hospital. Some children need that level of support, and that is completely okay.

Before We Sedate Anyone

We review your child's medical history, current medications, and past dental experiences before anything is planned. For children with special health care needs, that conversation often starts by phone so we can figure out the right setting before you make the drive.

What Changes When Sedation Is Part of the Plan

  • No Shots They Have to Feel. With IV sedation, numbing happens after your child is already asleep. For a child whose fear is tied to the needle, that alone can change everything about how the visit goes.
  • Everything Done in One Visit. We fit the work into a single appointment whenever we safely can, instead of asking a nervous child to come back three or four times.
  • The Dental Problem Actually Gets Solved. Decay in a baby tooth can cause pain and infection, and it can damage the permanent tooth growing underneath. Sedation is often what turns postponed care into finished care.
  • A Better Memory to Build On. Children who get through treatment comfortably are far easier to bring back for a cleaning, and that is how a frightened kid becomes a kid who does fine at the dentist.
  • Care That Works for Every Child. Kids with special health care needs, strong gag reflexes, or sensory challenges can get the same quality of dentistry as anyone else.
  • A Calmer Day for You, Too. Watching your child struggle is hard on any parent, and sedation makes the day easier for you, too.

Does Your Child Actually Need Sedation?

Asking about sedation doesn't mean you're jumping to extremes. It means you're paying attention. Nervousness at the dentist is very common in young children, and sedation is often what makes real, comfortable treatment possible. It is usually the right call for children who:

  • Have significant fear that doesn't ease with gentle encouragement
  • Need longer or multiple procedures in one visit
  • Have had a hard experience at another office
  • Have special health care needs
  • Are very young with extensive decay and can't hold still safely for the work

Plenty of children don't need it. If the main hurdle is the numbing shot, we use a technique called the SOAN intraosseous injection, which works faster and causes far less of the pressure and stinging kids dread. Many children who struggle with that one moment get through treatment just fine without sedation. If your child has a complex medical condition or you're simply not sure where they fit, we'll talk through the right path before anything is scheduled.

What to Expect the Day of the Visit

Before the Appointment

We review your child's medical history and check in on their overall health before sedation begins. Bring current medications, your insurance information, and a comfort item from home. Loose, comfortable clothes are best for the day.

During the Appointment

Your child is monitored the entire time, and the sedation lasts only as long as the dental work does. We will let you know ahead of time exactly where you will be waiting and when you will see your child again, so nothing about the day catches you off guard.

Recovery at Home

Some grogginess afterward is completely normal. Before you leave, we will walk you through what to expect, what your child can eat, and when to give us a call. Plan for a quiet rest of the day with easy foods and low-key activities. Most children feel like themselves again by the next day, and if anything feels off, we would rather hear from you than have you wonder.

What to Know About Cost and Coverage

We don't post sedation prices online because the honest answer depends on things specific to your child, including their age, the level of sedation needed, how much dental work is being done, and what your insurance covers.

We accept Delta Dental, Cigna, Guardian, BCBS, and Medicaid. Give us a call and we'll gather a few details to give you a real estimate before anything is booked. Our team can also walk you through payment options for whatever your insurance doesn't cover.

What You Should Know About Who Is Caring for Your Child

Sedation care is a bigger decision than a routine dental visit, and it makes sense to look closely at who you are trusting. Here is what we want you to know:

  • We are the only pediatric dental specialty practice in Oconee County, with pediatric dentists, orthodontists, and general dentists all working together under one roof.
  • Dr. Camille W. Horton, DMD, is a board-certified pediatric dentist, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the owner of the practice. She works alongside Dr. Richard Dolan Frye, DMD, and Dr. Cole A. Staines, DDS, who has a special focus on children with complex health needs, plus Michelle McInnis Keller, DMD, in general practice.
  • The anesthesia doctors we bring in are pediatric-trained medical anesthesiologists and dental anesthesiologists. Their only job during the appointment is keeping your child safe and comfortable.
  • All three levels of sedation are available here, so if your child needs more support than expected, you stay with the same team you already know.
  • We have three locations in Seneca, Clemson, and Piedmont, each with a welcoming waiting room, teledentistry intake, and arcade games to help kids feel at ease before they ever sit in the chair.

A tooth is a tooth no matter how small, and a scared kid deserves better than being talked into the chair.

Questions Parents Ask Before Saying Yes

Is Sedation Safe for Young Children?

Yes. Pediatric-trained anesthesiologists handle sedation at Issaqueena, and their one job that day is your child's safety and comfort. Our clinical team is trained in emergency response, and your child is monitored continuously from start to finish.

How Is In-Office Sedation Different from a Hospital?

With in-office IV sedation, the anesthesiologist comes to us. Your child gets the same level of care without the unfamiliar hospital setting, which tends to make the whole experience feel a lot less overwhelming.

How Long Will My Child Be Sedated?

Sedation lasts only as long as the dental work does. Most appointments run 45 minutes to an hour, with a short recovery period before you head home.

Will My Child Feel Any Shots?

Not with IV sedation. Numbing medication is applied after your child is already asleep, so there is nothing to feel and nothing to worry about beforehand.

Can I Stay with My Child During the Procedure?

That depends on the sedation level and what works best for the procedure. We will tell you exactly where you will be and what to expect before the appointment starts, so nothing about the day catches you off guard.

My Child Has a Medical Condition. Is Sedation Still an Option?

Often, yes. We gather details before your visit, sometimes by phone or teledentistry, so we can find the right fit for your child. Kids with more complex medical needs may be best served through our hospital-based option at Prisma Health.

Start With a Phone Call, Not a Commitment

You don't have to decide anything today. Just tell us what's going on with your child: what happened at the last dentist, what they're afraid of, what you've already tried. From there, we'll let you know which level of support makes sense and whether they might not need sedation at all. Sedation is one option we offer, not the automatic answer.

We're here Monday through Thursday, 8 to 5, and Friday mornings until 1. Call the office closest to you. We'd love the chance to be your child's dental home.
